Deck Of Chores; Review

Do you have a hard time getting your kids to pick up after themselves? Is it impossible to keep a consistent chore schedule in your house? It is for us. It's hard enough to get the mundane tasks accomplished, never mind the big chores (like washing windows!). As a member of the Homemaker Barbi team I was recently invited to try a new product designed to get your kids excited about chore time.
Deck Of Chores is basically an oversized deck of playing cards, with household chores listed on each card. You can use the cards to assign tasks, or to play games. Included in the Deck Of Chores are instructions for a few game variations, where your family "plays" for chore assignments.

I like that the cards are oversized (5.5 X 3.75 inches) and come in a sturdy box with a lid. There's less chance of cards going missing that way! I think Deck Of Chores would be fun the first few times, at least. But I think the kids would grow tired of it, especially because the games always end in chores!

One thing I'm not too crazy about is the limited amount of chores listed in the Deck Of Chores. Each card in a suit has a different chore, but these chores are repeated in each suit. So essentially there are only thirteen chores, repeated four times. I can see this causing a problem if all the kids end up with the same chore. Who would be responsible for doing it? And if you rely on the Deck Of Chores to assign all your household tasks, you're sure to miss some chores each week, or have your kids doing the same chore multiple times. That doesn't seem very efficient to me.

I think Deck Of Chores would be a great tool to use occasionally, to jazz up chore time. The family could play a round or two of the games, then move on to housework. It would be a fun and different way to get things accomplished once in awhile. I just don't think it's thorough enough to be effective all the time.

Deck Of Chores can be purchased online. I was provided with my own Deck Of Chores for this review.
